September Meetup Recap and Virginia Campaign Update

Hala Ayala

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our September meetup at Thurgood Marshall Academy focused on education in DC. We enjoyed the fascinating conversation lead by Eboni-Rose Thompson (Chair of the Ward 7 Education Council), Laura Fuchs (Washington Teachers Union, H.D. Woodson teacher), and Mary Beth Tinker.

In case you missed it, check out the video (thanks to Roy Harrison for streaming via FacebookLive!):

We also announced Wednesday that Jeremiah Lowery, Ombudsman (one of our elected officers) is stepping down from the steering committee because he has launched his campaign for At-Large Council in the Democratic Primary set for June 2018. We are sad to see Jeremiah leave our leadership team, but wish him well on this exciting new phase of his life and are glad he will remain a DC4D member. Roy Harrison (our current Fundraising Chair) has been appointed temporary Ombudsman, as our bylaws require. The bylaws also stipulate that a special election be held before 60 days to elect a new Ombudsman who will serve the remainder of the term (until February 2018). The special election will be held at our October 11 meetup.

If you are interested in running for Ombudsman, please reply to this email to request a petition. Petitions must be signed by 10 DC for Democracy members and are due on Friday, September 29th. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor at the October meetup. Please contact us at with any questions.

Hala Ayala is a Democrat running for the Virginia House of Delegates in District 51. She has been endorsed by Working Families and the National Organization for Women (NOW). DC4D is co-sponsoring a fundraiser for Hala with DC-NOW next Tuesday, September 19th 6-8pm. Special guest Tom Perriello will be there.

PLEASE DONATE HERE. The location of the fundraiser will be announced after you donate. And please spread the word to your networks!
