Tuesday’s election in Virginia brought a wave of hope that we haven’t seen in more than a year. Who would have thought that 13 of our 14 endorsed candidates would be celebrating victories? Our November meetup offered an opportunity to reflect on this success with a fantastic report back on the election results and the efforts of the Working Families Party to help elect progressive candidates in Virginia by DC4Der Zach Weinstein.

Ralph Northam (Governor), DC native Justin Fairfax (Lieutenant Governor), and Mark Herring(Attorney General) all prevailed. Democrats gained 15 seats in the House of Delegates, practically erasing Republican control (3 seats are still undecided, with the possibility of a 50-50 split). Congratulations to Jennifer Carroll Foy (HD-2), Elizabeth Guzman (HD-31), Hala Ayala (HD-51), Danica Roehm (HD-13), Kathy Tran (HD-42), Lee Carter (HD-50), David Reid (HD-32), Karrie Delaney (HD-67), and Wendy Gooditis (HD-10) for their wins, and Jennifer Boysko (HD-86) for her successful re-election. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that Donte Tanner (HD-40) will prevail in the recount.
But if this election brought hope, it was the result of constructive and committed action. I am so proud of the 40 DC4D members who took meaningful action in this campaign: 30 volunteers knocked on 3,584 doors, 21 members donated $1,956, and 4 volunteers made 533 phone calls for Jennifer Carroll Foy, Elizabeth Guzman and Hala Ayala. We organized 20 campaign events: 15 canvasses, 3 fundraisers, and 2 phonebanks. This was an unprecedented effort for an off-year election (thank you, Donald Trump!).
These members deserve to be recognized and celebrated: Joe Barrios, Linda Benesch, Pat Bitondo, Hugh Broadus, David Bryden, John Capozzi, Jackie Duclos, Doug Foote, Arundhati Ghosh, Brian Hart, Elinor Hart, Elisabet Eppes, Ashley Fox, Roy Harrison, Barbara Helmick, Ann Hoffman, Zach Israel, Keith Ivey, Malcolm Kenton, Joanne Kim, Jeremy Koulish, Jesse Lovell, Chris McGraw, Yury Nemetz, Jocelyn Nieva, Dave Power, Kevin Quilty, Andrea Rosen, Chelsea Rudman, Irma Salley, Zach Schalk, Gerry Schwinn, Elissa Silverman, Jonathan Silverman, Mary Beth Tinker, Noah Van Gilder, Terry Walz, John Wickham, John Zottoli, and Linda Zottoli.
Let’s take time to savor this victory and take satisfaction in our hard work, which is how we create hope for the future.
