August 2017 Meetup Preview

Eugene Puryear

Sam Jewler

Joe Barrios

Summer tends to be a slow season for many groups, but DC for Democracy doesn’t let up. When DC empties out for August vacations, we still remain active. Next month, our meetup will focus on the struggle to preserve affordable housing.

Eugene Puryear (Stop Police Terror Project, ONE DC) has long stood with the tenants of the Congress Heights apartments that are being threatened with gentrification by slumlord Sanford Capital. He will educate us about the latest efforts of those tenants to preserve their affordable homes.

Sam Jewler (Bread for the City) has worked to preserve affordable housing at the old Hebrew Home and Park Morton, and will educate us about those campaigns.

Joe Barrios is coordinator of DC4D’s Affordable Housing team and will update us on the work of the team in the Comprehensive Plan amendment process.

In the News…

In June, DC4D voted to join the “Put a Price on it, DC” campaign, also known as the Carbon Fee Rebate campaign. Check out this piece about the campaign, which features a photo of our own Jessica Wynter Martin!
